It is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Yom Kippur, the "Day of the Atonement", is today a day of introspection, of fasting, prayer and the seeking of forgiveness. Before the destruction of the temple in 70 A.D. though, it was the day when the High Priest would enter the Holiest of Holy to bring the annual sacrifice and confess the sins of the people.
For the life of the flesh [is] in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it [is] the blood [that] maketh an atonement for the soul. - Leviticus 17:11
