Universal Soul Circus

What is the Universal Soul Circus? Amazingly, in all of Google Groups there is one entry in soc.culture.african.american.moderated. We glean that they

  • visited Houston, TX in November 1999
  • have a web site
It certainly reminds me of Cirque du Soleil.

Update
I found the website - information was lacking because I was using the wrong search term. The right term is "UniverSoul Circus" not "Universal Soul Circus". It looks like fun, though PETA is less than enthused. Kevin Chappell wrote an article in 1996 in Ebony entitled "A circus with soul - Universal Big Top Circus".

You are right, I have attended the Soul Circus for approx 7 years now. I have always been there when they visited a location in the tri state area (NY, NJ, CT). I am trying to put together a group invite but there are no images for me to find. I will have to get from another source.

To answer your question, this is a circus that began with African Americans locally and has spread internationally. Just because of the title, does not mean its is only for or only has african american people in it. It has a wide variety and of folks on stage and in the audience. As a matter of fact every year the audience has gotten more diverse. In the begining, the crowd was limited because of the location (in Brooklyn where I am from)....but the acts were so good that a friend told a friend and to this day it is mixture of all kids and adults of all ethnicity.

It is also special because it teaches a moral lesson and there is prayer involved at the end of the show. It is a special show and I am proud to introduce it my children as a tradition we bond to every year.

tHe acts are great I might say. I hope they come to your area and you get a chance to go see it, ....
I hope I answered all of your questions.

how can i get tickets for the may 22 show behind yankee stadium

Posted by: barbara young at April 14, 2005 2:19 PM

Check out an article on AOL titled: Ebony: A Circus With Soul -- Universal Big Top Circus.
This gives a good bio on the cicus. And, it is one that even you might relate to; I agree it is a fantastic circus, which is getting finally it's fair share of coverage. Last year the local NAACP had good coverage for this affair at the Roy Wilkins Park fair grounds (Jamaica, NY) So maybe some of your NY readers may wish to contact them this year.

Universal Soul circus offers positive "family fun" for everyone. The acts are threaded with music and dance that reeks of African American music. I recommend this circus to families of all colors
