Hotmail and Outlook Express

If you already use Hotmail, you should consider reading and sending mail using Outlook Express. The integration is quite tight. You can also import your address list from hotmail, though, with multiple accounts, it could start getting a bit messy.

Setup Hotmail on Outlook Express

  1. Open up OE and go to Tools then Accounts
  2. Select the Mail tab and click Add then Mail...
  3. Fill out the forms making sure to add "@hotmail.com" to your email address
  4. Accept all the default settings
Import the Hotmail Address Book
  1. Select Tools, Address Book...
  2. Then, in the Address Book window, select Tools. Synchronize Now
  3. Enter your Hotmail password and it should import your address book into OE
Ok, several comments here. First of all, if you make any changes to your local address book, i.e., your OE address book, you must select Synchronize Now in order to see the changes in Hotmail. If you have multiple Hotmail accounts, this can help you combine address books (or, depending on your point of view, mix them all up). That said, it is probably good to have all your address books put together. Have fun!

I'm not sure if you're running an account(s) thru your ISP plus a hotmail account(s). If you're running Windows XP then try looking at http//:www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/ie/howto/oe/mspx If you look at "Set Up a Web-based E-mail Account" then this will grab all your hotmail folders and set them up in Outlook. Hope this useful. Cheers Steve

Hello,

I know the method to synchronize addresses or contacts between hotmail and Outlook Express. However I still can't do it because I have only 2 menu items under the "Tools" menu of the address book. "Options" and "Synchronize Now" are missing! I guess this is a configuration problem of the address book. Anyone can help?

By the way, I don't have Outlook on my machine, Outlook Express only.

Thanks!

I have Outlook Express and I have added my hotmail account with no problem. However, my son just got his own hotmail account and we added it the same way we added mine. But about once a week the program changes his account to my account so my account folders and mail shows up twice. When I go in to View Accounts, it says that his account is still the second account. So I have to delete it and re-do it.

Is there another way to make sure that my hotmail account doesn't take over his on our Outlook express?

Thanks

Under Tools|Options, there are two settings that affect this:
"When starting, go directly to my Inbox folder" and
"Send and receive messages at startup".

If *both* of those are enabled *and* the default mail account is
Hotmail, then OE opens the Hotmail Inbox at startup, which of course
automatically downloads any new headers, AND initiates a background
send/receive, which of course downloads any new messages in the Hotmail
Inbox, and thus duplicates are created. The problem appears to be that
those 2 functions don't communicate with each other.

Since both functions are actually downloading the same messages, and
since each message has its own unique message ID, manually deleting a
duplicate will result in *both* copies being deleted. If you already
have duplicates in a folder, I think the Synchronise commands should
remove the duplicate entries without deleting the message on the server.

To avoid the problem of duplicates, you should disable either of the 2
start-up options. If you want OE to open directly to the Inbox, then
disable "send and receive messages at start-up."

Hi,

I have set up my hotmail with Outlook Express and used the synchronise address book options to get all my contacts in outlook express (to then export them to another email account).

It seemed to work until i saw that most of my contacts did not have any other info apart from their name??!! no email address with 90% of the synchronised info! have retried several times but with no effect.

please please help, i am getting fed up with hotmail.

thanks, Alexis

I have a hotmail account. I do not currently use outlook express to access hotmail.

I have another e-mail account that I have just started- and will continue to use for at least the next two years.

I want to get ALL my hotmail contacts INTO my outlook, but not into outlook using HOTMAIL identity, rather this new e-mail address...

IS THIS POSSIBLE?

thanks.

Hi every-one.

I don't think you can do this any more as I've just tried and got an error message saying that I have to upgrade my homail membership to be able to do it. Is this true or is there a way round it?

Many thanks, Rory

Hi, Hotmail instructed me to reregister.I resubmitted my e-mail name and password. I have now lost all previous e-mails and my address book.It is if I have been given a brand new account. Is there any thing I can do? Is there a contact e-mail or phone number for Hotmail? Thanks Sophie

Good morning!

I keep losing my Hotmail Folders in Outlook Express 5.0. I delete the account, re-enter the account info, i.e. name, HTTP, etc., only to have the folders disappear a week later. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!
