Try this. Open up a browser window and jump to http://www.ebay.com. Now, in the same browser window, paste in http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&query=donuts. Select View->Source, and do a Find for "dSI". You'll see something interesting:
dSI(0,1,0,0,1,0,0,1,0,0,0,2,2341979206,"*L@@K*-100*DogThis is very interesting, because it gives information, in an easily parsable form, on each item on the page. You might think to yourself, what a great way to parse eBay searches. However, all is not so straight-forward. First of all, if you open a new window and just paste in http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&query=donuts and do a search for "dSI" in the source, you won't find it. Something happens when you first enter the eBay home page. It isn't a header cookie, and I'm not sure it is the one put in by Javascript. It may have something to do with the eTag header. It is known that Java servlets use this field to run sessions. I tried cURL with cookies to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?*CHEWS & RAWHIDE BONES *Donuts",20753,'','$2.99','','$12.98',1,"1m","0h 01m","in 1 min","Aug-27","16:29","Aug-20","16:29",{});
dSI is a function found in the included sale_search.js file. Kindly, eBay gives definitions to all the fields:
It was a combination of request headers that made accessing this dSI page possible: host and cookie. There were only 2 cookies you had to pass to get the page and they never changed (which was nice). What made the dSI page even better for parsing was the fact that it was 100k less than the non-dSI page. However, they changed the way they serve their content this past labor day weekend and from what I can tell the dSI pages no longer exist. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
Posted by: TetterkeT at September 5, 2003 10:49 AMActually, the DSI is still there. Let's chat - I bet we can figure it out. The trick is that you have to go to www.ebay.com first. There a cookie is set identifying the browser window. Then when you do a search, you'll see DSI. However, if you cut and paste the search to another window you won't see it.
Posted by: torque at September 5, 2003 10:29 PMI don't see the dSI pages anymore no matter what I do. Perhaps you can paste a portion of the source and or more details of the search your doing so I can try and duplicate it?
Posted by: TetterkeT at September 6, 2003 12:18 PMWhoops, it looks like I spoke too soon! Apparently the key cookies to accept are "ebay=js/1" (which obviously represents that your browser is javascript enabled) and "count=1". Cool, thanks for the info!
Posted by: TetterkeT at September 6, 2003 12:26 PMI seem to be getting the dSI pages if I add the 2 following headers to the HTTP Request:
wc.Headers.Add("User-Agent", "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT
5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 1.0.3705)")
wc.Headers.Add("Cookie", "ebay=js/1; lucky9=241756; search=Set-Cookie:
search=st2; minMax=; keepmesignin=in; Listing=itemtime1; etfc=1; count=1")
Does any one know the definitions for the query paraments, such as:
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?
GetResult
&sokeywordredirect=1
&ht=1
&sosortproperty=1
&satitle=Pocket Knife
&from=R8
&sorecordstoskip=100
What is R8 with the "from" paramenter? I'm trying to find out what each means.
Two Comments. Here the first for getting the dsi-Page.
Here a java-example for getting the dsi page (took me some hours) :-)
The lucky9 is not needed and I also do not need the count=1. The only cookie that I submit is the ebay=js/1!
//Look in german ebay
String URLName = "http://search.ebay.de/search/search.dll?salistedinsite=77&satitle=marvel+exklusiv+-condor&sotextsearched=2&sorecordsperpage=100&sorecordstoskip=0"; //For the first 100 Marvel comics
URL u = new URL(URLName);
HttpURLConnection con = (HttpURLConnection) u.openConnection();
con.setRequestMethod("GET");
con.setDoOutput(true);
con.setRequestProperty("Accept", "*/*");
con.setRequestProperty("Accept-Language", "de");
con.setRequestProperty("Pragma", "no-cache");
con.setRequestProperty("User-Agent", "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; .NET CLR 1.0.3705; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)");
con.setRequestProperty("Host", "search.ebay.de");
con.setRequestProperty("Proxy-Connection", "Keep-Alive");
//THIS IS THE TRICK!!! ebay=js/1 tells Ebay that your client welcomes Javascript!
con.setRequestProperty("Cookie", "ebay=js/1");
BufferedInputStream bis = new BufferedInputStream(con.getInputStream());

Thomas
Here the second comment to Jason for the parameters of the search.
I use this search page: http://search.ebay.de/search/search.dll with this parameters:
salistedinsite=77 (Only look in Germany, is default if ebay.de is used but I set it explicit)
satitle=marvel+klassik+-condor (The Search condition)
sotextsearched=2 (If 2 search also description, if missing only search tilte)
sorecordsperpage=100 (Records per page)
sorecordstoskip=0 (First call 0, second 100,...)
If you search in Ebay for the description a different subdomain (search-desc.ebay.de) is used but I can do this description search also with the search.ebay.de by setting the sotextsearched parameter to 2)...
I have also seen the from=R8 and some other weird parameters but I think this stuff is not needed!
Ciao
Thomas
Thank you that helped. If anyone else knows more of them or where I can get a complete listing at please post it. I am documenting them and will post them once I get a more complete list.
Thanks,
Jason
Posted by: Jason at December 5, 2003 8:36 AMI have done some analysis of the variables passed to the dSI function. One that confuses me is the 5th - "saleType". It seems that 9 = BIN only, 2 = no reserve auction, but 1 can be a reserve auction, NR auction OR auction with BIN... doesn't seem very logical...
Posted by: Chimp at December 6, 2003 11:13 AMGot it:
1 = auction, 2 = dutch auction, 9 = multiple item BIN only.
Reserve was a red herring.
Most of the upgrade variables are 0 or 1 except giftIconType which is 0 or 32.
Posted by: Chimp at December 6, 2003 11:41 AMSo for sure there is no "No Reserve" info in the dSI right? I wish there was.
Posted by: Jeff at December 11, 2003 6:02 PMWould you know the changes Ebay has made in the past to make screen-scraping and DSI parsing more difficult? Maybe there is a web site resource that would give more information on this...
Posted by: Dan at June 2, 2004 4:30 PMThis was a cool post, but none of this seems to be working now. Does anyone have any updated information on this??
Posted by: G-man at June 18, 2004 10:42 PMeBay switched from dynamic (query type) URLs to "pseudo static" URLs.
Nonetheless the old search.ebay.xx/search/search.dll?..... and search-desc.ebay.xx/search/search.dll?....still continues to work as in the past.
Replace .xx with with the country specific version of eBay, e.g. .it, .de, .co.uk, .es, .fr (even if I believe they are all finally processed at a central eBay site)
Note that the old style URLs are converted on the tly to the new ones via an http redirect that can be easily sniffed.
To convert new URLs back to a readable format use the js routine ebayGetUnencodedHost that is automatically loaded on eBay pages.
function ebayGetUnencodedHost(){
var dl=document.location,tp=unescape(dl);
if(tp.contains("_W0QQ")){
if(tp.split("/").length==4){
tp=tp.replace(/_W0QQ/,"?");
tp=tp.replace(/Z/g,"=");
tp=tp.replace(/Q3A/g,":");
tp=tp.replace(/Q3a/g,":");
tp=tp.replace(/Q3B/g,";");
tp=tp.replace(/Q3b/g,";");
tp=tp.replace(/QQ/g,"&");
}
}
return tp;
}
For conversion from old-style URLs to new style there are other built-it eBay js functions. but i had no time to dig deep inside.
Sorry, I don't know anything about DSI, but I managed my old Macintosh to issue eBay queries via Sherlock and parse the result pages. That's all.
I use the query:
search.ebay.xx/search/search.dll?
sofocus=bs
&sotextsearched=2
&soloctog=1
&sosortproperty=1
&sotimedisplay=1
&query=user_entered_keywords
I believe that sotimedisplay=1 means "use absolute dates such as NN-Mon-YY", sotextsearched=2 means "search in title and description". Dont't know about the other parameters. I noted I have different values of soloctog (1, 2, 9) for different countries (UK, DE, IT), but I don't remember the reason for that.
